LBL ATLAS Desktop Computing System

The ATLAS group at LBL has access to a system of linux desktop computers. These computers run SLC 4 or SLC 5.

The computers belonging to this system are:

  • atlas1.lbl.gov through atlas15.lbl.gov

This system is structured as follows:

  • Home directories are located on a central fileserver and are visible from all the linux desktops. These home directories are backed up. Users have disk quotas. Type 'quota' to find out your quota and current disk usage.
  • Each workstation has a large local disk, mounted a /scratch-local that can be used for storing large files. This area is not backed up.
  • Authentication credentials (passwords) are shared across all the desktop computers. Users may login to any computer in the system. Passwords must be changed every 180 days in accord with laboratory policy. You will receive an email reminder daily starting one week before your password expires.
  • Most of the workstations are named atlasN.lbl.gov, for N between 1 and 15 (but may expand in the future). These machines have most standard software installed (emacs, pine, firefox, gv, root, cernlib) but do not in general have athena installed. AFS is installed, with /afs/cern.ch available on all workstations. CernVM-FS is also installed, visible in the usual place.
  • There are a couple of special purpose computers that users may also login to:
    • sts.lbl.gov is an all-purpose machine available for group use. It also shares passwords with the rest of the system.

In order to use the system you must obtain an account by contacting Jeff Anderson <JDAnderson (at) lbl.gov>. Once your account is created you will be able to login to any of the above described machines.

If you have a workstation on your desk you will probably use that machine exclusively.

Questions or comments about this system should be directed to Jeff Anderson <JDAnderson (at) lbl.gov>.
